Kind Presence

Day 65: Kind Presence

“Practice presence, embrace the place where life happens.” – Eckhart Tolle

It is not very easy to practice presence, to be in the moment, to feel certain feelings, to accept where we are. If we are experiencing joy, happiness or pleasure, we of course want to stay in that moment and feel it. What happens when we find ourselves somewhere we do not enjoy, in a place that does not make us happy and with people that bring us displeasure? Do we stay in the moment or try to distract ourselves from the unpleasant and uncomfortable feelings. It is so much easier to avoid or push away or even distract, but are we not just delaying the feelings or the uncomfortable conversations?

Kindness to Self:

As difficult as it is to be completely in the present moment, it is probably the kindest thing we can do for ourselves in the long run. Try to practice being in the present moment in whatever way you can. You can definitely get better at it by practicing meditation, yoga, tai chi. or even walking meditation. Personally I use my time in the pool as a swimming mediation. Whatever the activity, practice being in the present moment and see if you become a little kinder.

Kindness to Others:

There is a quote by Jesse Jackson that says something to the affect of your children need your presence more than your presents. This is so true. I think it can be expanded to include all people. Everyone needs our presence more than presents. We all crave human connection and to be seen, understood and valued. Practice presence and see the kindness that can be created.

Kindness to Strangers:

As I mentioned above, we all crave human connection. Go out of your way to connect with those people that work in the service industry, behind a counter or ticket booth. Make an extra effort to engage with that person, you just might make their day!

Kindness to Our Planet:

Go outside and practice being in the moment, feel the coolness of the air as you breathe in, feel the mist of the rain or the warmth of the sunshine on your skin. Breathe in the scents that surround you. Open your eyes and take in whatever you see. Maybe even take off your shoes and feel the ground that you walk on. We are surrounded by beauty and wonders, take a moment or several to be in the presence of where ever you find yourself.
