Day 29: Kindness is Taking Pleasure in the Small Things
“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” Robert Brault
Yes, taking pleasure in the small things is what life is made up of. Maybe it’s waking up to a beautiful sunrise, a big smiling toddler at your bedside, a warm cup of tea, a hug from your tween daughter and a genuine thank you from your ill child when you bring him homemade soup. Enjoying the little things is a art that has become more and more difficult in our fast paced world, where our attention is constantly being competed for from ads, to our electronic devices, our social media outlets, our work, carpools, volunteering and the never-ending to do lists. What little things bring you pleasure and happiness? Seek out those small things that make you happy and you will learn to slow down and enjoy all the little pleasures of life.

Kindness to Self:
Taking pleasure in and enjoying the small things in life begins with each of us. When life feels drab, boring, uninspiring and routine, can you find your joy? Where does your joy lie? Find it, create it and live in the small pleasures in order to create the big things.

Kindness to Others:
Taking pleasure in the company of others and sharing moments, creates lasting love, memories and adds up to the most important part of life: love and companionship.

Kindness to Strangers:
Can we find pleasure in the company of strangers? Absolutely! Last weekend I took my kids out ice-skating and to lunch. We had to wait in a long line for a table at the restaurant. As my kids were off playing, I took pleasure in observing the interactions of the woman and her toddler in front of me. It reminded me of my children at that precious age of toddler hood and the bond that has continued to grow with each of them. It also reminded me of how blessed I am to have two amazing and healthy children. Finding pleasure in this woman’s love for her child also gave me the gift of peace, I did not for one moment, mind standing in that long line.

Kindness to Our Planet:
Taking pleasure in all the gifts our beautiful and bountiful earth offers, is easy. We are surrounded by natural wonders, the gift is taking the time to notice and appreciate it. Last night, I took pleasure in listening to thunder, hail, wind and rain beat against the windows and roof. Yes, it interrupted my sleep, but it was glorious to witness the grand display of mother nature. We also desperately need the rain here in California. I hope it keeps raining!
